All Mercedes cars to be turbocharged by 2010
Mercedes-Benz will introduce the turbocharged engines across its entire line in two years.
“All our vehicles have production turbocharged engine series in late 2010 at the late,” Thomas Weber, board member of Daimler responsible for research and development, said new motor vehicles in Europe to a Press event in Dusseldorf, Germany, Thursday.
The next legislation in Europe and the USA force automobile manufacturers to reduce auto emissions.
Demand for turbochargers is growing because they offer a proven and relatively inexpensive to reduce fuel consumption. With the addition of a turbocharger, Daimler may install smaller, lighter engines and more fuel-efficient without sacrificing performance.
Under current proposals, the European Commission asked the German automobile manufacturer to cut its fleet average emissions of 178 grams per kilometer to 138 g / km by 2012. The Commission will refine the car manufacturers who are unable to achieve the targets.
Improving the efficiency of its existing engines is the first part of Daimler’s strategy to reduce levels of CO2 emissions throughout its fleet. Weber said that the medium-term step would be to introduce a hybrid technology. The class S - Sedan’s flagship Mercedes - will be offered as a full hybrid vehicle starting in 2009.
Weber also indicated that training in zero-emission is the long-term goal of the German automobile manufacturer. To achieve this, Daimler plans to use technology such as fuel cells and electric vehicles. A full-electric version of the For Two sister brand Mercedes smart enters production in 2010.
